Cup that cheers fares well in Poland

The local participants of the Poland food fair have been able to secure orders worth US$ 100,000 - 200,000.

The Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) and three private companies - Imperial Tea Exports, Classic Teas and Adam Expo - took part in the Polagra Food Fair in Poland from September 10-13.

The largest food fair in Poland, Polagra has been ranked as a leading agricultural and food sector exhibition in Europe from 1985.

The fair was attended by 934 exhibitors from 38 countries in addition to 20,000 trade members. Sri Lanka and India were the only tea producing countries at the fair, but a large number of local tea packers exhibited their products.

The SLTB stand was opened by the Sri Lankan Ambassador in Poland Tudor Gunasekera. All visitors to the stand were given a 25g free sachet of Ceylon Tea to popularise the brew among Polish tea drinkers. The liquid tea service was also popular. The three companies promoted their brands which covered black tea, green tea, organic tea and flavoured tea in packs, bags, tins and ceramic caddies.

Poland is one of the major tea markets in Eastern Europe and its annual tea consumption is estimated to be about 30,000 MT. India is the major supplier of tea to Poland, but the share is declining due to the increased demand for orthodox tea. Sri Lanka and China are the other main tea suppliers to this market.

Tea bag consumption is about 60 per cent of the total tea market and is increasing gradually. Sri Lanka supplied 2,124 MT of tea to Poland last year out of which 45 per cent was in tea bag form. Poland is the third largest buyer of tea bags from Sri Lanka, mainly due to the strong presence of Dilmah brand pure Ceylon Tea.

Further growth in the tea bag sector coupled with participation at the fair will help more Ceylon Tea brands to enter this important market.
