Sommelier's competition for the eighth year by Chitra Weerasinghe The Free Lanka Trading Company, the distributor for E&J Gallo Wines in Sri Lanka, will conduct the E&J Gallo Sommelier's Competition for the eighth year in succession, in association with the Ceylon Hotel School Graduates Association and the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management. E&J Gallo is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest winery in the world and has been assisting Free Lanka Trading to conduct this competition in the hope of upgrading the bar-tendering skills of young people working in five-star hotels, restaurants, pubs and clubs island-wide. Since the inception of this competition 1,400 people have been trained. The semi-finals of this competition commenced last month in six regions - Colombo, Negombo, Kandy, Cultural Triangle, down south and deep down south. Prior to the semi-finals, the competitors follow lectures and are given a quiz to test their knowledge of wines, wine growing areas of the world, how wine is made, how it is to be served and with what food it should be paired. Five of the best from each region are selected to compete at the finals, scheduled for November 3. The 30 semi-finalists will thereafter be given a week's training at the Hotel School free of charge. They will be tested again on their training. They will also be invited to fine dining experiences at various five star hotels to give them the practical experience of matching food with wine. On the results of this training program, three of the best will be selected to compete at the finals. The first three winners at the finals will receive cash awards while all finalists will receive gifts and certificates. |
