Join hands for ECU at Lady Ridgeway by LAKMAL WELABADA The 'Pears Safe Hand Project', in aid of an 'Emergency Care Unit' (ECU) to be set up at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital OPD, was launched on October 1 to coincide with the Universal Children's Day. Unilever Ceylon Ltd., the importer and distributor of 'Pears Baby' products, has undertaken the project with an initial donation of one million rupees and has appealed to the public to join the company to make it a success. Twenty five cents from each Pears Baby product sold will be credited to the 'Pears Safe Hand Fund' with effect from last Tuesday. Apart from the project for the ECU which will initially be for one year, the fund will facilitate children to safeguard against three common major health problems - respiratory, cardiac and kidney failures. At a news briefing on the project held recently, Dr. Nimal Jayantha, Chairman and Director Lady Ridgeway Hospital, said that an ECU was a long felt need at the hospital, which is the only children's hospital in the country, serving as the national referral centre for paediatric, medical and surgical care for children below 12 years of age. "The hospital has 1,100 beds and about 1,500 employees. Over 250 children are admitted everyday," he said. According to statistics, out of 768,951 (the total number of patients treated at the OPD), 67,601 are emergency cases. "The first few minutes would be the most decisive in saving the life of a child with a serious condition. Hence, an ECU has been a major requirement at Lady Ridgeway," added Dr. Jayantha. |
