IFS on expansion drive

Software must be built as components with the facility to be reused according to customer requirements, IFS President Asia Pacific Mark Rabjohns said.

The Swedish multinational organisation, IFS (Industrial Financial Systems), a global leader in component-based applications, ensures that the customers get the planned returns on investments from the business application solutions it has provided.

A component-based architecture is used to mix and match different modules according to the changing requirements of the customer. This feature is said to be unique to IFS applications. A well defined implementation methodology is in place to guarantee that projects are completed on schedule within the budget.

IFS has been in Sri Lanka since 1997 with the operation holding a prominent position as the island has one of the largest Research and Development Centres (R&D). The Colombo office overlooks the South Asian region.

IFS also set up the marketing and implementation team to overlook projects within Sri Lanka and the region.

IFS Sri Lanka employs over 600 persons and is one of the largest employers of IT personnel in the country.

The good education system coupled with flexible rules and regulations in the country were the reasons for IFS to establish one of its largest R&D centres there. Poland and USA also have R&D centres.

Though IFS entered the software market in 1983, it was not marketed aggressively, but concentrated instead on developing a good product.

"The product we have developed is considered as one of the best in the market," Rabjohns added. Among IFS' future plans are becoming a market leader in some segments and expanding operations. At present it is focusing on expanding operations in India and China.

Rabjohns said: "We have developed solutions for infrastructure projects. Therefore, we can support any infrastructure project in Sri Lanka".

He was of the view that Sri Lanka can be developed as a logistics hub due to its strategic location and the highly intelligent workforce.

IFS markets eight industry specific solutions.

These are solutions for aviation and defence, automotive, forestry, telecommunications, engineering, energy, dot coms and service management.

IFS applications are used by Toyota Lanka, D. Samson Industries, AES Kelanitissa, Sri Lanka Telecom, Ceylon Shipping Corporation and Suntel. The company has over 70 offices in 43 countries and is listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.
