Awards galore for Elephant House ice-cream Ceylon Cold Stores, the manufacturer of Elephant House ice-cream, has won a series of awards this year, culminating with the Gold National Food Award for its ice-creams. Managing Director Ceylon Cold Stores (CCS) and Sector Head of Food and Beverage John Keells Sumithra Gunasekera said Elephant House ice-creams had also won the ISO 9001 certification, the SLS certification, the HACCP certification, the Akimoto Merit Award for 5S and the Industrial Excellence Award. The current market leader with over 80 per cent market share, CCS has, during the past three years, invested over Rs. 180 million in the ice-cream plant improving technology and equipment. "In fact we have exceeded our sales figures beyond 2003 and are performing on a corporate level beyond our targets. As a result, we now have to bring forward our expansion plans", said Gunasekera, who added that CCS has also advanced its future investment as well to keep pace with sales. Gunasekera said the company was developing a strategy to increase productivity, marketing and placement while increasing the overall per capita consumption of ice-cream in the country. Of the 20 ice-cream flavours available, Vanilla continues to be the most popular. The ice-creams are available in bulk form tubs, as Wonder Bars and Jumbo Jolly sticks. "Our three-wheeler mobile operation, launched recently now stands at 45. We hope to increase this to over 100 by the end of the year," said Gunasekera. 'Pani Cadju' too has been a success with over a million tubs being sold every month. CCS had to bring in another machine to cope with the demand, he said. Elephant House ice-creams are currently exported to the Maldives. The company hopes to widen its overseas market in the near future. |
