Planting season in second stage...

The second planting season of the National Jak Development Project's (NJDP) program of planting 100,000 jak saplings throughout the country, has begun. The eighth planting ceremony, initiating the planting of 10,000 jak saplings was held yesterday at Koslanda, Badulla.

It is encouraging to note the support of the clergy and community based organisations and the Non-Governmental Organisations in this regard. The value of jak as a means of environmental conservation was also recognised in the recent jak planting efforts at Dumbara Manana, Ratnapura and at Koslanda, Badulla.

"Kandu Sirasata - Thuru Viyanak" planting ceremony at Dumbara Manana, initiated planting of 20,000 saplings of valuable trees including 2,000 jak saplings in the area, specifically the Kukulegala range of hills. The range with an extent of about 6,000 ha. is the watershed sustaining the waterways of four villages of the Dumbara Manana area. It also powers many a small hydropower scheme. However, recent drying up of these water sources had the villagers facing a severe shortage of water. Research lead by a team of experts from the University of Peradeniya had revealed that deforestation due to tea plantations and logging had been the cause of drying up of the water sources of the area.

The present effort is to arrest the environment degradation and the resulting adverse conditions.

Concurrently, the Lions District 306A also held a tree planting campaign planting 5,000 trees, including 2,500 jak saplings throughout the district.

Showing their support to the NJDP's jak propagation efforts the National YWCA of Sri Lanka and Hope for Children Fund, have come up with a jak dehydration project to arrest the waste of jak-fruits in the villages. A pilot project was launched at Kudagama, Rambukkana last week by Bob Parson, President, Hope for Children Fund. Technical support for the project was provided by "Weerya Seva Sansadaya" a community based organisation in Rambukkana.
