Talk of the Town

by Chitra Weerasinghe

A Kids' Zone

Those constantly on the trail are happy. Yes! Happy because the management of Keells Hotels believing there is much, much more to Sri Lanka than sun and fun are offering them some value-added services. The first of these is the launching of a Kids' Zone Club for all those children who accompany their parents on holidays.

Membership to this Club is confined to those between 4 to 12 years. And the biggest deal for them is that if they accompany their parents to any of the Keells Hotels, they get a free stay. The parents, on the other hand get a discounted rate on their accommodation and every guest could participate in those 'get-to-gethers' which the hotel has from time to time and which is both educative and fun.

There are 'Nature Adventures, both at the Habarana Lodge and Habarana Village - where they could go bird watching, trekking, cycling, or on jeep or elephant safaris.

Taking beauty culture to Jaffna

What a wonderful gesture, I thought as I sat listening to the committee members of the National Cosmetology Association of Sri Lanka (NCASL) talk of their proposed plans to conduct classes in health and beauty care in Jaffna.

The women there are as anxious as their Colombo sisters to look beautiful. They are eager to know the do's and don'ts of hair care; and we have had several calls even from women in Batticaloa requesting help for such problems as falling hair and what vitamins they are to take, said beautician Bernie Balasuriya.

And Shanti Outschoorn, General Manager, Sri Lanka Exhibition & Convention Centre (SLECC) is willing to help in this effort as far as she possibly could.

Right now both the NCASL and SLECC are getting ready for the Bridal, Health, Beauty and Gift Fair 2003 which is to be conducted for the seventh consecutive year and scheduled from March 20 to 23.

As in previous years, Bridal Fair 2003 will have a variety of stalls manned by suppliers of the numerous items that are required for a wedding. Besides, a prospective bride could consult the professionals present on where to go for what - be it wedding cake structures, bridal bouquets, jewellery, poruwa makers, hairdressers/beauticians and so on, says NCASL's Premasiri Hewawasam.

NCASL is affliated to several international associations and he will be getting down all the relevant beauty needs plus things like salon chairs, trolleys, professional hair dryers and whatever necessary for this big exhibition.Outschoon says apart from the 100 stalls, there will be fashion shows, competitions and demonstrations - all up to international standards; plus lots of new ideas that a person visiting the exhibition could gather.
