Beauty Queens grace Lake House

By Jayanthi Liyanage

The sombre curtain of formality of Sri Lanka's foremost publishing and newspaper "House" by the "Lake" was raised for a while to let in a flood of sun shine last Tuesday, when the world beauties decided to take a peek into how the newspapers, which generously splashed out their pictures during the last few weeks, were made.

Dressed in morning crispies, they dipped their necks into Araliya garlands held out by debonair ANCL male staffers and walked to the reception warmly accorded to them at the Company Board Room by its Chairman, Nalin Ladduwahetty, Director-Editorial, Bandula Padmakumara; Working Director, D.K. Somasiri; General Manager, B.A. Jinadasa and Chief Executive Officer, A.M.S.B. Amarakoon.

"You have brought luck and peace to this House which is rich in tradition and has a factory atmosphere opposed to a five-star office," said the Chairman, welcoming the contestants to the official print media which has virtually been on tip-toes covering the 2002 Miss Tourism International pageant. "Hope this beauty visit would continue to be a yearly event," rejoined Sebastian Perera, Franchise Director of the pageant and Chairman of its Organising Committee.

The freshly printed colour pages, handed to the young beauties touring ANCL's page-making area, drew smiles and grins as they recognised their own faces hot on print. Later, they gathered for cakes and iced-coffee with the Company Management as cameras clicked to capture the rare moment on lens.

"I arrived here very late but the day I landed in Sri Lanka, I won the first runner-up title in Miss Beautiful pageant," said a contented Sandra Muller, Miss Austria, who plans lingering after the World Pageant to taste the joys of the local countryside. "Aruba is a warm blue all over," reflected Vanessa Vanghaus, Miss Aruba. "The sea is bright blue, the houses are light blue - Blue is my country! And yours is a green all over!"

Our own local beauty, Anoja De Mel, was exuberant on the eve of being shown the paces of "Tea Plucker's Dance" by guru, Premasiri Hewawasam, just in time for "Miss Talent" mini-pageant on October 2, at Trans Asia Hotel. "I am having fun! That's what matters more than winning." The contestants, who were accompanied by Jackie Perera, Director, Celsin Ltd. and Angela Humble, international compere and choreographer, had each a memento to take back home when the visit ended - an "ANCL gift" presented by the Chairman and Director-Editorial. They were waved off at the doorway by charmed ANCL employees crowding to catch a last fleeting glimpse of vanishing beauty.
