Commemoration of LTTE martyrs

by Ananth Palakidnar

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam commemorated the fifteenth death anniversary of twelve of their regional commanders yesterday who committed suicide, en masse, when they were to be airlifted to Colombo on October 5, 1987.

According to sources an elaborate ceremony was organised at Thiruvil, Vadamarachchi, where a memorial has been erected for the twelve senior cadres who were the founder members of the LTTE along with supremo Veluppilai Prabhakaran.Soon after the signing of the Indo-Lanka accord in 1987 the twelve LTTE cadres were arrested by the Navy when they were crossing the Palk strait to reach Tamil Nadu.

When arrangements were made to airlift them to Colombo for further interrogations they committed suicide by swallowing cyanide. Later this incident led to the second phase of the Eelam war between the LTTE and the Indian troops who were here to implement the Indo-Lanka accord.
