by CHAMIKARA WEERASINGHE

In response to public outcry over the recently launched 'Colombo by Night' programme, to boost a night economy, the Colombo Municipal Council has taken steps to heighten security and transport facilities during late hours, to successfully continue with its plans.

"We have got positive response from the police as well as the private transport companies to address the situation", Colombo Deputy Mayor M. Azath S. Salley said.

Salley said that Colombo DIG, Bodhi Liyanage had confirmed his fullest co-operation from his department", he said.

"The Police have agreed to deploy special patrols with personnel to oversee that things run smoothly at night".

"We had discussions with private transport companies and we were able to get Namdo Transport Lanka Pvt Ltd to run their 688688 taxis at discount fares from last week, with charges reduced from Rs. 40 to Rs. 24 for a kilometre. Several other transport services will also come into operation in the near future".

"Meanwhile, we are also making progress with the public transport sector in getting their support as well", he said. Commenting on his future plans the Deputy Mayor said, arrangements were being made to illuminate a section of Green Path, Colombo 7, and a selected area for marketing. We will also introduce attractive facilities at the Galle Face Green".

"Some banks have keyed up to promote mobile banking at night in Colombo", he added.

Asked to explain the purpose for going for a night economy, Salley responded , "We have introduced the program keeping in mind that Sri Lanka will develop into a hub of Asia, like Singapore".

"On the contrary, there is a need to resuscitate the economy that has gone into ruins during the past.

Launching decent night environment will also mean, advent of a double economy", he concluded.
