Sri Lanka eyes two medals in men's golf

by DINESH WEERAWANSA reporting from South Korea

BUSAN, Oct. 5 - Sri Lanka is heading for two possible medals in golf in the men's individual and team events on completion of third of the four rounds of the 14th Asian Games continued at the Asiad Country Club course here today.

Sri Lanka's Anura Rohana continued his impressive form for the third successive day to share the first place with Indian Shiv Kapur with 214 each after three 18-hole rounds of golf during the last three days.

Rohana had only a 73 in the third round today, his worst after 71 and 70 in the first two days, but his total of 214 was still good enough to account for the top berth with Kapur out of 65 golfers taking part in the men's individual championship.

Kapur, who was placed third on day two, had an impressive 69 today to elevate his position after scoring 70 and 75 in the first two rounds.

In third place behind Rohana and Kapur are H. W. Chang of Taiwan (216 with 75, 67, 74), followed by his team mate Chen Liang Cheng (217) the fourth place. Sri Lankan Tissa Chandradasa shares the fifth place with Yusaku Miyazato (Japan), Toyokazu Fujishima (Japan), and Hyun Woo Kim (Korea) with 219 each.

Chandradasa, who is giving Rohana good support in the team championship, followed his 74 and 73 with a slightly better 72 in the third round tee off today. But the third Lankan golfer taking part in the championship - Lalith Kumara is far behind his team mates Rohana and Chandradasa at 24th with 231. Kumara who had 78 and 75 in the first two days fared no better in coming out with 78. Sri Lanka is placed third in the team championship with 664, behind Taiwan (650) and Japan (654). In the fourth place behind Sri Lanka in the men's team championship is Korea (666), followed by India (676), Thailand (681), Malaysia (684) and China (687) out of 16 countries taking part in the team championship.

"I hope to go for a medal. I could do that if I come out with a good round of golf tomorrow. We should be able to try for a medal in the team championship too," Anura Rohana said after the round three today.

Tomorrow (6) will be the fourth and the last round in the golf championship and it could well turn out to be a red letter day for Sri Lanka, as they stand a good chance of winning medals both in the individual and team championships.

It all depends on how good Rohana would be as he has been playing some entertaining golf here to keep Sri Lanka's chances alive. Rohana now could look forward to emulate the feat of Nandasena Perera, who bagged the men's golf silver medal at the Beijing Asian Games, 12 years ago.

Ratnayake in quarters

Sri Lanka registered its first boxing win at the 14th Asian Games when Anuruddha Bandara Ratnayake entered the quarter finals of the men's flyweight 51kg event at the Masan Gymnasium, Masan, some 60km off Busan here today.

Ratnayake landed some powerful blows to Ramesh Shrestha of Nepal as the Pakistani referee Muhammad Aslam Qureshi stopped the bout when the second round was only 51 seconds old.

Ratnayake, who completely outclassed the Nepalese, will now take on China's Gang Zou in the men's flyweight quarter finals on Monday (7).

Sri Lanka kabaddi team suffered its second successive defeat at the 14th Asian Games when they went down to Pakistan 6-20 in their preliminary round match played at Tongmyong University of Information Technology. Having lost the opening match to Japan 4-23 yesterday, Sri Lanka failed to give a fight. Pakistan, who led 6-2 at the breather, had ten more outs and four lona in the second half. The Lankans will meet Malaysia in the third match to be played on Sunday (6).

Lean run

At the Busan Yachting Centre, Sri Lanka's Jirasinghe and Kishan Janaka continued their lean run in the men's Enterprise open event of the 14th Asian Games sailing.

On completion of six of the 11 rounds of races in the Enterprise Open, the Lankan duo are placed fifth and last in the overall standings so far.

However, Jirasinghe and Janaka won the third place behind Korea and India in the fourth race worked off this morning. But the Lankans were pushed back to the fifth place in the fifth race which followed. In the sixth race, the third for today, the Lankans once again finished third after Korea and India.

The placing at the end of fifth race with the net points are: 1. Korea (5), 2. India (10), 3. Pakistan (16), 4. Malaysia (18) and 5. Sri Lanka (20).

Sri Lanka's Henry Boteju lost to Singaporean Choon Kait Tey 6-11 in the pre quarter finals of the Pool 9 ball singles event of the Asian Games billiards competition.
