SSC vs NCC for 'JR' Trophy Two cricketing neighbouring giants - SSC and NCC will meet each other in a limited over match for the J. R. Jayewardene Trophy today at the SSC grounds. Caltex Lubricants Lanka limited, the official sponsors of the Sinhalese Sports Club Premier division team, has come forward to sponsor this match which was inaugurated in 1997 due to the efforts of then NCC president Leslie Hewage. Caltex will be sponsoring the match for the first time. In 1997, SSC won the inaugural rain affected match under the leadership of former Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga. Hashan Tillekeratne led the NCC in that match. In 1998, the tournament was not held due to players of both sides being on national duty, but the following year, SSC once again won under the leadership of Ranatunga. Tillekeratne was the NCC skipper on that occasion too. In year 2000 host NCC won the trophy under Tillekeratne. Hemantha Wickremaratne was the SSC captain. In 2001, the tournament was called off due to the non-availability of national players. However, the two clubs have decided that the tournament will be played in future even if key players of both sides are not available.
