Three branches of aquatic sports at National C'ships - Oct 17 to 19 by LESLIE FERNANDO The National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union (NAASU) decided to hold the National Swimming and Diving Championships along with the National Synchronised Swimming Championships and the National Waterpolo Championships to be staged from October 17 to 19 at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool. This is the first time all three branches of aquatic sports events are to be held simultaneously. Twenty events will be worked off for both men and women in the swimming championships. All heats and preliminaries will be held during the morning session commencing at 8.30 a.m. All finals will be held in the afternoon commencing at 2.30 p.m. Those swimmers not reporting at start-up time may be disqualified and no appeals will be allowed. The 'One start' rule will apply. (There will be only one start to a race and any competitor breaking the start will be disqualified). Out of the twenty events, eight events will be held as timed finals: 1500 metres freestyle (men), 800 metres freestyle (women), 200 metres butterfly (men), 200 metres butterfly (women), 400 metres freestyle (men), 400 metres freestyle (women). 400 metres individual medley (men) and 400 metres individual medley (women). Award of points for swimming individual: first (10 points), second (7), third (6), fourth (5), fifth (4), sixth (3), seventh (2), eighth (1). Relays: first (20), second (15), third (13), fourth (10), fifth (8), sixth (6), seventh (4), eighth (2). Any competitor wishing to withdraw from participating in an event must do so one hour before that event. Failing to do so will involve in a fine of Rs. 200 being imposed. Diving There will be three separate events for diving, one metre and three metre spring board and platform 5 1/2 metre, 7 1/2 metre and 10 metre. All diving events will commence at 11.00 a.m. on all three days. Synchronised swimming The synchronised swimming competition will consist of four events, solo, duets, teams and free routine combination. These events will take place on October 18 and 19 after noon. All competitors should perform for about thirty minutes before the winners are found. Points for diving and synchronised swimming will be awarded on the following order first (10 points) second (7) and third (5). Waterpolo The waterpolo championships for men and women will be held today (Sunday) at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool from 8.30 a.m. The championships will be worked off on a knockout basis. The draw will take place today at 8.15 a.m. and all captains are requested to report to the Waterpolo Controller by 8.00 a.m. Today, the finalists will be found and the final will be played on the last day October 19. The women's final will be at 11.00 a.m. and the men's final at 5.00 p.m. on completion of the final day's swimming events. The National Swimming and Diving, Synchronised swimming competition and the waterpolo tourney will be held under the rules of NAASU and where inconsistent, the FINA rules will apply. |
