Bitten by cricket bug

Moratuwa is known for its cricket as much as its carpentry where one can find the best of furniture. And hailing from this cricket loving town is young Chaminda Dias a former product of Prince of wales College, Moratuwa, one of the two institutions which has produced many a Sri Lankan cricketer. The other being St. Sebastians College.

Interestingly, Chaminda is a cricketer who has taken to carpentry to support his family while running a cricket club. Having formed the Summerset Sports Club three years ago, Chaminda was brimming with excitement at the prospect of fielding a team for the next Division-III `Daily News Trophy' tournament.

But then making ends meet has not been easy, according to this enthusiastic cricketer who said that as a new club there were the constraints of not having a ground of their own, necessary finances and equipment.

Chaminda, who is the President of Summerset S.C. cum player, says that he mainly form.ed the club so that talented youngsters who could not make the grade to the first XI due to heavy competition, could yet flaunt their talents. "I'm hoping that atleast one player from this club could make it to national level", enthused Chaminda who said that there were about 6 players were former products of Prince of Wales and St. Sebastians.

Currently, the team practices at the Tyronne Fernando Stadium. Chaminda was thankful for financial assistance coming their way from a former Cambrians cricketer, Supem Madura Fernando, a lawyer who had taken a keen interest in the club. Also, Uswatte Confectionaries, Moratuwa had come forward in donating twelve bats.

Chaminda has to keep home fires burning in supporting a wife and kid from the little income he gets from carpentry while keeping the club going. He was hopeful that help would come from cricket loving quarters. The club is based at No. 48/1, 1st Lane, Rawathawatta, Moratuwa. (Tel. 074-215174.)
