At Asian meet : Overseas School, Colombo swim away with title

The Overseas School of Colombo swimmers put up a remarkable performance to become overall champions collecting 1380 points at the South Asian International Schools Association Swimming Championships organised and hosted by Overseas School of Colombo and concluded at the OSC swimming pool at Battaramulla recently.

Swimmers from international schools in Nepal, Bombay, New Delhi, Lahore, Karachi and Dhaka participated.

Delhi's American Embassy School, with 1348 points, took second position, followed by American International School, Dhaka which had 1154 points, International School, Karachi was placed fourth with 761 points, Lahore American School fifth with 354 points fifth, Latin American School Nepal sixth 196 points and American School, Bombay seventh with 92 points.

Five individual and two relay records were established at the three-day meet.Katherine Baker of American Embassy School, New Delhi was responsible for three new records in the girls 15-18 age group 100 metres backstroke, 200 metres individual medley, and 100 metres freestyle. Allie Ivanowiez of American International School, Dhaka had two new records in the girls 13-14 age group 50 metres freestyle and 100 metres back stroke. Emily Coyle of American Embassy School, New Delhi was the fifth individual record breaker in the girls under 12-50 metres freestyle. Overseas School of Colombo relay quartet set new marks in the girls 15-18 age group 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay and in the girls 15-18 age category 4 x 50 metres individual medley.

The SAISA challenge shield was won by Overseas School of Colombo.

Peter Gittins, the Head of the Overseas School of Colombo speaking on the occasion said that as a school 'we are delighted to be hosting this event and to provide with, an albeit brief picture of Sri Lanka.' During the course of the meet all swimmers were asked to pay due attention to the rules and regulations governing this event and to take time to mix with students from the other SAISA schools. "As you are all aware SAISA is not only about winning, but rather about competing to the best of one's ability and doing so in the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship," he stressed.

"Events of this type do not happen, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Hughes, Ms Moss, Mr. Hazell, Ms Hapugalle and Mrs. Noordeen for their work in putting this event together, the hosting families for so graciously opening their homes to our guests, our teaching support and administrative staff for their work over the course of the event. Our NAASU officials for officiating, our caterer Mr. Mack and finally all the participating swimmers for their individual and collective efforts," Gittins concluded.
