S. Thomas' take 'first leg' beating Royal 4/3

S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia underlined their supremacy when they lifted the Dr. R. L. Hayman Trophy for the ninth time with a thrilling 4 goals to 3 win over their arch rivals Royal in their under-18 waterpolo (1st leg) played at the Royal College swimming pool yesterday.

The Thomians have been winning the trophy since 1992 (8 times, 2 encounters drawn).

S. Thomas' started confidently going ahead 1-0 in the first quarter with a fine goal by Thanura Abeywardena off a direct pass by Wayne de Silva. The second quarter saw the Thomians making it 3-1, notching two goals by Wayne de Silva and Thanura Abeywardena. Sachithra Saratchandra shot for Royal.

It was 1-1 in the third quarter - Damith Rozairo struck for Royal and Thanura Abeywardena who had fine game scoring the Thomians.

Royal missed several easy scoring chances in this quarter. Royal fought back and scored the solitary goal off Kusal Jayasekera but the Thomians came out worthy winners.

The winning Thomian team-Wayne de Silva (capt), Thanura Abeywardena, Dilshan de Silva, Lasitha Perera, J. Joseph, R. Nagarajan L. Kosgodage, N. Fernando, D. Perera, D. Thamanaegama, D. Gunaratne, T. Kulasinghe, D. Saram, Z. Zainudeen, D. Fernando, S. Barthaolomeusz.

Royal won the under-15 encounter defeating S. Thomas' by 3 goals 2. They were presented the RCUAC Challenge Shield.

Referees Kusan Yapa and N. K. R. Bamunuarachchi.

Dr. David Ponniah, Warden S. Thomas' College was the chief guest.

The 2nd leg will be played on October 11 (Friday) at the S. Thomas' College Swimming pool commencing at 5.00 p.m.
