Students at these Institutions are required by tradition to draw portraits and figures out of live models. During his tenure in Europe he had the opportunity of drawing portraits at Mont Matre in Paris and many other European cities which included Venice, Munich, Heidelberg and London. These drew large crowds simply to watch him bringing out a life-like image of the live model. His father used to draw portraits of the members of his family when
they were young kids in their family home in Matara and Brindley's
abilities are due to the representing the human figure is one of the most
challenging of artistic disciplines, as well as the most fascinating.
Brindley is the recipient of the Best Portrait Award by the then Prime Minister Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike for portrait drawing at the 107th anniversary art Exhibition of the Ceylon Society of Arts held in 1995 and also certificates of merit for two of his portraits in later years. He is a regular participant at the annual Kala Pola organized by the George Keyt Foundation held at Ananda Kumaraswamy Mawatha. Brindley Jayatunga will exhibit at Lionel Wendt Art Gallery at 5.30 p.m. on October 25 and on 26 and 27 from 9.00 a.m. till 6.30 p.m. |
