Sri Lanka take on Kazakhastan in Rugby Asiad opener by LAL GUNESEKERA Sri Lanka will meet Kazakhastan in the opening match of tourney on November 16 at the 18th Asian Rugby Championship (Asiad) to be staged in Bangkok, Thailand from November 16 to 24. Sri Lanka who are in pool 'A' of division II takes on Thailand on November 18 and India on November 20. The sides in Pool 'B' are Singapore, Malaysia and Arabian Gulf, while China, are not participating this year. According to the President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) Commodore Harsha Mayadunne, the winners of Pool 'A' will meet the winners of Pool 'B' on November 23. He also said that Nizam Jamaldeen has been nominated to "blow" at the Asiad. The Sri Lanka team will comprise 26 players and four officials. Sri Lanka beat only China at the 17th Asiad in Amori, Japan in 2000, losing to both Thailand (28-38) and Singapore (12-15). South Korea, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong will continue to play in division I. Commodore Mayadunne further said that after Sri Lanka's disastrous performances at the Asian Games, the national selectors have been informed to pick new talent. He said: "I will be meeting the selectors within the next few days and the Premier Cup tournament will be witnessed by the selectors. However, the pool will continue its training under C. P. Abeygunawardene. |
