Jorg Kinder believes Sri Lanka must capitalise on scenic beauty and sports

by UPANANDA JAYASUNDERA Kandy Sports Special Correspondent

Love for outdoor sports, brought Jorg Kinder - the Resident Manager for Thomas Cook in Male to Sri Lanka for the fourth Lanka Sports Reizen International Marathon held on October 6 in Kandy.

He has participated in the triathlon (swimming, cycling and running) events all over in Europe and in 1995, ran the Bremen Marathon in Germany in 2 hours 33 minutes. He hopes to run in the London and New York Marathons in the near future.

Jorg, who is a national level swimmer too, believes that participating is events such as this one in Kandy is more important than winning at all cost. He started as a tour guide and has worked his way up the ladder.

From the experience that he has gathered in tourism, Jorg Kinder feels that since peace has finally dawned in Sri Lanka, the country has much to offer to the visitor as the country has a rich history and the cultural sites to visit and sport such as golf and fishing and also cricket will surely boost the tourist image of the country. A. M. A. Bandara won the full marathon for men and W. A. D. Mallika Chandrakanthi won the full marathon for women.

In the full marathon for veteran men, S. M. M. Padmasiri won with Witzoko Otmar of Germany coming second.

Then in the half marathon for men, R. M. Y. G. A. Bandara won while John Kelai of Kenya was second. Debbie Foggin of United Kingdom won the half marathon for veteran women, while S. H. R. Silva was second and Catherine Carlson of America was placed third.

In the half marathon grand veterans event for women, America's Agness Stafford won the event.
