SriLankan Golf Festival - a tourney full of prizes by A.C. DE SILVA Seven it is said is a lucky number and the seventh edition of the SriLankan Golf Festival to be held from October 24 to 27 at the picturesque Victoria Golf Course holds out the promise of exciting fare as around 70 foreign golfers are expected to match their wits with over 100 Sri Lankans for top honours. SriLankan Golf Festival had put out a lavish spread of prizes for the tournament in keeping with the title it carries and it should be four days of well fought out matches for golfing fans who should make their way to the Victoria Golf Course. This is a amateur tournament that carries a maximum handicap of 22 for men and 24 for ladies. The Victoria Golf Course has been described by many as one of the most scenic golf courses in the world and this was confirmed by golfing enthusiast Prasanna Subasinghe, Manager Promotions, Corporate Communications at SriLankan Airlines. He has been a golf enthusiast and has played golf around six years ago when he was manager of the Thailand office and though his work right now does not permit him much time to play golf, Prasanna still prefers golf to cricket. He was also a cricketer of sorts at the Colombo campus. Golf, he said, was a more relaxing game, but one has to really concentrate on the game. One has also got to be fit to play golf as one round of golf takes a good 70 kilometres walk. So, it is a good mixture of good promotional work and the sport that fancies him most that Prasanna Subasinghe is directly in charge on the SriLankan Airlines side for the promotion of this prestigious tournaments. Golf is a sport loved by many around the world and in the off season period, of SriLankan Airlines, the management has done well to think of this novel idea of promoting their image through golf. Many are the prizes on offer at this tournament with trophies and airline tickets thrown in for good measure to have a rich flavour that will really have the players interested. There will be prizes for the winner of the senior division for men and women over 55 years, while the junior player who is 18 and under who has the best nett score over two rounds will be one Economy Class return ticket to any SriLankan Airlines destination in the Far East. There are many awards for aggregate stableford scores among men and ladies. There are also holiday packages for those who get a hole-in-one, nearest to the pin (men) and (ladies) longest drive for men and ladies, while the best nett score for the day (men) or (ladies) will get one economy class return air ticket to Maldives for each day (a total of 4 tickets). There will be memento and surprises galore for all participants in this tournament. The golf course measures 6,945 yards at its full championship length, Victoria's par 73 lay out has five par 5 holes of which three are over 500 yards long. There are four fine par 3 holes ranging from the very short but tricky 4th of 116 yards to the testing 210 yards 12th holes - a great par 3 by any standard. The course will be open to all registered players from October 23 to 27 on a complimentary basis for 'friendly' golf or practice rounds on days other than each individual's competition rounds. |
