Newsmaker of the Week : Parakrama Dissanayake
Employees who have been suspended, interdicted, on compulsory leave or with disciplinary inquiries pending on account of any misconduct are not eligible to apply for this scheme. Employees who are on no pay leave or are bonded to fulfil an obligatory period of service are also not eligible to apply for this scheme. Employees who are retrenched under this scheme will not be permitted to re-join the public service including corporations, statutory boards and government-owned companies under any circumstances. Chairman SLPA Parakrama Dissanayake said: "We are trying to right-size the organisation and are planning to do it in three stages. At present the SLPA employs 18,500 and we hope to reduce about 6000 employees. "There is a tremendous response from the unions and workers to apply for the scheme and I hope to issue the circular next week to effect the VRS. Initially we hope to reduce from non-essential categories such as clerical staff and security and will move into other categories later. "Under the VRS scheme, for every year a person has worked he/she will get two months' salary while for every year a person is loosing due to taking up the VRS, he/she will be entitled to one month's salary." |
