New challenges for the private sector The Business Convention 2002, organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) on the theme 'Competitiveness and Change: New Challenges for the Private Sector' will be held on November 1-2 at the Trans Asia Hotel. The keynote address on 'Competitiveness and the global economy' will be delivered by Former CEO Hahn International Ltd J. Nicholas Hahn. 'Competitiveness challenges and opportunities in the global market place' is the theme of the first session. Trade Economist, The Competitiveness Initiative Franck Weibe will speak on 'WTO and a surging China', Chairman Mast Lanka Ashroff Omar will speak on 'End of MFA and impact on the garment industry' while Chairman Ceylon Biscuits Mickey P. Wickremasinghe will speak on 'Indo Lanka Free Trade Agreement and practical issues'. The session will be chaired by Chairman Creations Ltd. Lyn Fernando. The Co-Chairman is Chief of Party, The competitiveness Initiative, John Varley while the panellists are Chairman Mas Holdings Mahesh Amalean, Group Chairman CIC B.R. Lakshman Fernando and Director Intercom Sarada de Silva. Session two is themed 'Ways to Improve Competitiveness'. President J.E. Austin Associates Kevin Murphy will speak on 'Adding and capturing more value', Supply and Distribution Consultant USA Jagadesh Mirchandani will speak on 'Supply chain management', CEO 3rd Wave Consulting Stefan Moraes will speak on 'Meeting international standards -ISO and others' while Managing Director and CEO Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology Dr Lalith Gamage will address the gathering on 'A competitive strategy for Sri Lanka's ICT industry'. The Chairman of this session is Managing Director Haycarb Rajan Yatawara, while the Co-Chairman is Group CEO Delmege Forsyth Group Dr Kamal Weerapperuma. Panellists are Country Manager IBM World Trade Corporation Kavan Ratnayake, Director Carsons Cumberbatch Chandima Gunawardena and Chairman Prudential Technologies H.D. Gunawardena. Session three on the theme 'Strategic competitiveness through branding and marketing' will feature CEO Sting Consultants Ruchie Gunawardena on branding and marketing, Patent and Trade Specialist The Competitiveness Initiative Judy Goans on national trademarking, Marketing Director MJF Group Dilhan Fernando on product branding in Sri Lanka, Chairman Ellawala Exports Chanaka Ellawala on gem and jewellery and Managing Director GlaxoSmithkline Consumer Healthcare Kosala Dissanayake on marketing and distribution. The Chairman of the session will be Chairman Singer Sri Lanka Hemaka Amarasuriya while the Co-chairman is Managing Director Gordon Frazer Michael J. de Zoysa. The panellists are Managing Director HVA Lanka Exports Rohan Fernando, Managing Director Ceylon Cold Stores Sumithra Gunasekera, General Manager (Marketing) Union Assurance Ramal Jasingha and Managing Director Odel Otara Chandiram. Session four themed 'Global competitiveness report' has as speakers Chairman Ayojana Fund Management Ranel T. Wijesinha on 'Sri Lanka Survey and Chamber Scorecard'; Consultant Competitiveness Initiative Andrew Warner on 'Analytical findings, conclusions and recommendations'; and Executive Director Institute of Policy Studies Dr Saman Kelegama on 'Policy reform critical to competitiveness in Sri Lanka'. The Chairman of the session is Chairman James Finlay D. Juriansz and Co-chairman is Director (Human Resources) Unilever Ceylon Dr Anura Ekanayake. The panellists are CEO Eco Power Dr R. Bandaranaike and Senior Economist Central Bank Dr H.N. Thenuwara. Session five themed 'Human Assets' will have MD Slimline Dian Gomes on 'Investing in the workforce', CEO NDB Housing Bank Faizal Salieh on 'Building an effective partnership - The role of business in tertiary and vocational education' and Secretary General CCC Renton De Alwis on 'Labour reforms to improve productivity' as speakers. Chairman of the session is Deputy MD CTC Jayampathy Bandaranayake, Co-chairman MD Ceylon Trading Co T. Ellawala while the panellists are MD Hayleys Rizvi Zaheed, Head of HR Sri Lankan Airlines Sunil Dissanayake, Director Staff Development Centre University of Colombo Prof Suki Ekaratne and Group HRD Maharaja Organisation P. Serasinhe. Themed 'Financing growth', the session six speakers are MD Eagle Insurance and immediate Past Chairman CCC Chandra Jayaratne on 'Achieving double digit economic growth', former Business Development Director United States Trade Development Agency Jeanette Miller on 'Financing infrastructure projects', Consultant Competitiveness Initiative Terry Mohorruk on 'Export credit financing' and CEO NDB Bank Eran Wickremaratne on 'Innovative banking'. The Chairman of the session is Chairman Tea Tang Mahen Dayananda, Co-chairman is Chairman Forbes and Walker Chrisantha Perera while the panellists are CEO NDB Nihal Welikala, General Manager and CEO DFCC Bank Nihal Fonseka, Partner Ernst and Young Lakmali Nanayakkara and Deputy General Manager Commercial Bank Haris Premaratne. The final session is themed 'Investing in Sri Lanka - Experiences of investors'. The speakers are CEO SAGT Maciek Kwiatkowski on 'Port development', Country Manager and MD Shell Robert Moran on Energy, COO MIT Manju Hathtotuwa on 'Information and communication technologies' and CEO and MD CEAT Holdings Ramesh Ramanathan on Rubber tyres.
