Taiwan trade, investment mission visits Sri Lanka

A 20-member Taiwan trade and investment mission was in Sri Lanka recently to explore trade, investment and joint venture opportunities.

Luke H. Lu, Director Taipei, Economic and Cultural Centre in New Delhi, India, addressing a reception to the delegates, urged Sri Lanka to open a trade office in Taipei because many Taiwan firms are keen to invest in Sri Lanka, bring tourists and import Sri Lankan produce. If not for the closure of the Taiwan Trade Office in Colombo, Taiwan would have been the biggest foreign investor in the island and not South Korea or Japan, he said. There are only 33 Taiwanese investors in Sri Lanka.

He added that 600,000 Taiwanese Buddhists visited Thailand last year although Sri Lanka is a more beautiful country, with more historical places for Buddhists.

Lu further said that they would welcome Sri Lankan workmen with a minimum wage of about US$ 1000. Jim Ramanayake, President, Sri Lanka-Taiwan Business Council,on whose invitation the mission arrived in Sri Lanka, said Sri Lanka was an excellent location for investment with many harbours around the island, good infrastructure facilities, industrial parks and skilled English-speaking workers.

Sri Lanka has a literacy rate of 95 per cent. The SAARC market, he said, was bigger than China or the European Union. Free trade agreements and SAPTA tariff concessions give an advantage for exporters from Sri Lanka.
