Intake in North and East as well : Recruits flock to join Forces

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

The Sri Lanka Army launched an islandwide recruitment drive last week to fill over 5,000 vacancies for soldiers. A significant feature is that this is the second time since the outbreak of the war, that interviews are held in Jaffna, Batticaloa, and Mannar following the commencement of the peace process, Director Recruiting, Colonel Sunil Senanayake, told the 'Sunday Observer.'

When interviews were held for the first time in those areas, a number of Tamils and Muslims joined the Army from Trincomalee, but no one from Jaffna.

Equal opportunities will be given to everyone with necessary qualifications. The minimum eligible qualification is Standard Eight, this time, but those who have passed two subjects at the GCE (O'Level) Exam are assured a promotion after one year.

Nearly 500 recruits have already been selected and the first batch will be trained at the Dombagoda Army Camp.

Asked what the response was after the peace process, Colonel Senanayake said there was no significant change as such, but it was slightly better since the standard of the qualification required has been brought down. The closing date for interviews for recruitment is November 16.

Meanwhile, the Navy and the Air Force too have started their annual recruitment program. Air Commodore Ravi Arunthavanathan said that the Air Force has only 500 vacancies for which there was a very good response. Earlier too the response to join the Air Force was positive, he added.

The Navy began its monthly recruitment program islandwide to fill about 2,000 vacancies and the response was so far satisfactory, naval sources said.
