CR - lucky entry to final of Premier Champions Trophy Rugby Tourney

by LAL GUNESEKERA

CR & FC were very lucky. They managed to beat CH & FC by 18 points (1 goal, 1 try, 2 penalties) to 16 (2 tries, 2 penalties) after leading 10-8 at half time yesterday under floodlights at the Sugathadasa Stadium to enter Saturday's final in the Club Knock-out Rugby Championship for the Premier Champions Trophy. This is being organised by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs in association with the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU).

CR would have won by a bigger margin, but their play was very scrappy and selfish at times and failed to get past a good defence and spoiling work put up by CH. CR's threes too were guilty of not tackling low.

CH on the other hand missed the services of a reliable place-kicker. They fluffed two simple penalties within the first 10 minutes through Dinuk Wijeratne. They fared very well to restrict CR and even in the last 10 minutes of play were inside CR "22" but failed to penetrate the defence.

CH's scrum-half Champika Nishantha went over after a good break off a ruck and Rajapaksa made certain of the conversion. A few minutes later Rajapaksa put over a simple 20-metre penalty for CR to lead 10-0. Then came a 30-metre penalty by Saranga Jayakody to reduce the lead for CH (3-10) and just before half time skipper Sashi Cooray used his weight to great advantage off a five-metre short-tap to barge over, but Jayakody failed to convert (CH 8-10).

After the turn around, CH took the lead (11-10) for the first time with Dinuk Wijeratne putting over a 22-metre penalty, but it was short lived, as CR, once again went into the lead (13-11) when Rajapaksa fired across a fine 40-metre penalty. In the 12th minute, CH grabbed the lead once again when a grubber by Saranga Jayakody saw CR's full-back Rajapaksa failing to put his boot to the ball and CH's left winger Ajith Upawansa collecting and touching down. Wijeratne failed with the kick (CH 16-13).

Four minutes later, CR, regained the lead with second-rower Roshan Perera going over from a five-metre line-out on the left flank, but Charith Kodagoda missed the conversion (CR 18-16). A few minutes later, Kodagoda, fluffed another penalty for CR.
