Pathmanathan - OBSERVER-BATA Schoolboy Cricketer of North, Gnaneswaran runner-up by A. C. DE SILVA Cricket among the schools in Jaffna District has come alive once again with day to day activities returning to normal after the efforts of the government to restore peace showing positive results during the past few months. Cricket was a draw card in the good old days and with the latest efforts to restore peace, the schools in the district have wasted no time and have got cracking in their efforts to restore the game to its past glory. To help the encourage the schoolboy cricketers, the Jaffna Schools Cricket Association has activated itself and tied up with Cricket Umpires Association of Jaffna District in selecting the Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the North and the runner-up. The Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year and other allied contests have been going on for 24 years and it is a healthy sign for the promotion of the game in the island that the efforts of the Bata Shoe Company of Ceylon Limited and Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited have borne fruit with the Jaffna Schools cricketers too joining their counterparts in other parts of the country joining in this contest. St. John's Jaffna cricketer Lavendra Pathmanathan has been picked as the Schoolboy Cricketer of the North, while St. Patrick's Selvin Lloyd Gnaneswaran is the runner-up. Though only the winner and runner-up in the Northern section has been picked this year, it is hoped to widen the area of selection and have other sectional awards too for the Northern region from next year. Both cricketers are allrounders, with Pathmanathan making 362 in seven games. He also captured 35 wickets. Gnaneswaran made 301 runs from six games and he too has captured 35 wickets. The President of the Cricket Umpires Association of Jaffna District V. Balasingam was present at the selection committee meeting. |
