S. Thomas' all the way... win Overall title and the prestigious 'Boat Race'

Thomian oarsmen put up yet another remarkable performance to retain the overall title for the 16th time and lift the T.N. Fernando Trophy at the 30th annual Royal-Thomian Regatta 2002 held on the Beira Lake yesterday.

S. Thomas' won 4 trophies out of 6 showing superior rowing skills and outrowed arch rivals Royal by a big margin of 34 points to 6.

In the series Royal have won the 'plum' 13 times and one ended in a tie. Thomian oarsmen with superior skills and strength won the Senior Sculls (Senior Sculls Trophy), Senior Pairs (Freddie Raux Trophy), Junior Fours (Eraj Wijesinghe Trophy) and Senior fours (Boat Race Trophy). The fifth win for the Thomians was in the Junior 'B' fours, no points awarded for this event.

Meanwhile Royal won the Junior Sculls (Ajith Goonewardena Trophy) and the Junior Pairs (Chulla Samarasinghe Trophy).

The Boat Race tally now stands equal with 17 each. For the last two years Royalists have been winning the Boat Race the main event at the regatta.

S. Thomas' had a clear lead of 14 points to 6 up to the fourth race. Then the Thomians went on to win both the Junior Fours and Senior Fours to collect further 20 points 8 plus 12 for the main race, the Senior Fours, the much looked forward event was won easily by the Thomian crew. Thomians on the inside had a clear lead from the outset and maintain the lead to the finish to record a time 3.23 secs winning by 8 secs. Thomian crew comprised Dejan De Zoysa (Bow), Tharindu Gunasekera (two), Praveen Karunanayake (three), Isuru Perera (stroke) and Sharen Kannangara (Cozswain).

The Royal-Thomian 39th Regatta was sponsored by Dialog GSM.

Junior Sculls: Lakith Lankaputhra of Royal College beat Dejan de Zoysa of S. Thomas' College by 6 secs (Time 3:55 secs)

Junior Pairs: S. Wanigasekera (B) R. Jayachandran (S) M. Careen (C) of Royal College beat Hishan Fernando (B), Darshana Goonaratne (S) Sean Abeyewardena (C) of S. Thomas' College by 3 secs (Time 4:37 secs).

Senior Sculls Isuru Perera of S. Thomas' College beat Suranjaya Dharmaratne of Royal College by 12 secs (Time 3:48 secs)

Senior Pairs:Prashith Ganegoda (B), Tharindu Gunasekara (S), Dathika Wickremanayake (C) of S. Thomas' College beat S. Padmapriya (B), R. Jayasinghe (S), R. Wishwakula (C) of Royal College by 9 secs (Time 4:33 secs)

Junior Fours: Hishan Fernando (B) S. Nistar (2) P. Ganegoda (3) D. Gooneratne (5) L. Weerasinghe (C) of S. Thomas' College beat A. Sulziash (B) N. Gajendradas (2) N. Caldera (3) T. Jayathilaka (S) A. Deen (C) of Royal College by 12 secs (Time 3:25 secs)

Junior 'B' Fours: Nash Navaratne (B), Shannon de Silva (2) Dineshka Aluwihare (3) Mahangis Weerasinghe (S), Dathika Wickremanayake (C) of S. Thomas College beat K. Sooriyarachchi (B), R.
