Peiris and Senaratne to benefit from Carey Grammar Cricket 'schol'

Two young cricketers - Lahiru Peiris of St. Peter's College, Bambalapitiya and Sukhitha Senaratne of Royal will leave for Australia in January to savour the Carey Grammar Cricket Scholarship.

The two cricketers are expected to be in Melbourne in the middle of January and first will stay with the old boys of their respective school until January 27 when they will move into accommodation provided by the Carey family network. The school term is from January 31 to April 1.

The scholarship for term 1 in the Year 2003. The two cricketers will attend academic classes and also play for Carey in the Victorian Schools Cricket tournament.

Peiris is a right-hand batsman and a right-arm off-spinner and he was the captain of St. Peter's College under 15 team that won the division one tournament of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association and Peiris scored a century and three half-centuries in that tournament.

Senaratne has been an opening batsman from his early days and has represented Royal in the under 13, 15 and 17 and under 19 age groups. He represented Royal 'A' in the 2001/2002 season and was the highest run-scorer with an aggregate of 439 runs. He is a left-hand opening batsman and a right-arm medium pace bowler.

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Roshan Mahanama, now the President of the Sri Lanka Cricketers Association assisted with the selection of the two boys.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation of Victoria (SLCFV) headed by Dr. Quintus de Zylva assisted Carey International Grammar School in Victoria in the initiation of this scholarship and if successful, the Australian school hopes to offer this scholarship every year.

The visit of Sri Lanka cricketers to Australia is eagerly looked forward to by followers of the game there in late December. The Sri Lanka team will arrive in Brisbane on December 11. On December 29th, the charity cricket match in aid of the Hope Cancer Hospital for children in Sri Lanka - termed the 'Battle of Hastings' will be at Hooper Oval against a victorian country league XI while the Cricket Ball will be on Saturday, January 18 at Moorabbin Town Hall. Then on January 21 (Tuesday) Sri Lanka will play Australia in a day-night match at the MCG, while on January 25 (Saturday) the second final also a day-night encounter will also be at the MCG.
