Travel trade kicks off beach rugby

by Pelham Juriansz

Seventeen teams from fourteen organisations will participate in this year's Travel Trade Beach Rugby Tournament sponsored by Walker Tours. The last time the Beach Rugby Tournament was held was in 1998 when Walkers won the Tournament and Grand Oriental hotel were runners up when it was held in Negombo. Today, the scene of action will be the Bentota Beach Hotel.

The TTSC so far have held a Bowling Competition, Volleyball, Cricket(Softball and Hardball), Soccer and Netball, Tennis, Athletics and Badminton.

They hope to conduct Basketball, Swimming and Volleyball Tournaments and a Motor Rally to complete the year's events.

The fourteen companies represented are as follows.

Walkers Tours(Top seed), Grand Oriental Hotel(Bottom seed), Air Club "A" and "B", Sri Lankan airlines "A" and "B", Airport Garden Hotel "A' and "B", Palm Garden -Eden, Travel Shop, Riverina Shop, TGL Travels, Emirates, World Air, Kandalama, Hemas

Travels and Classic Travels.

Speaking at the Press Conference at the John Keells Board room on Tuesday, October 15, Vasantha Liyanananda, MD of Walkers Tours said that Walkers have been involved with the Travel trade for some time and they have got involved with Beach Rugby because it is very exciting and they have a close association with the Bentota Beach Hotel which is a part of the John Keells network.

"We hope that beach rugby will be a success and that the Travel Trade activities will grow from strength to strength." said the MD of Walkers Tours.

"It is a good opportunity for those in the travel trade to interact with each other and enjoy better fellowship and comradeship.

This event has been revived after 4 years and this year Air Club has a very strong team " commented the Co-ordinator for the TTSC, Tyrone Perera. " Because 17 teams cannot be divided into groups we will have the first two rounds as knockout and each game will be about 20 minutes which means that we could conduct about 3 games to the hour and we will take the whole day to complete the 20 games scheduled."

An award will be given to the most outstanding player of the Tournament and in the case of a tie the match will be decided on the toss of a coin except in the case of the semi final onwards where extra time will decide the result.

The Chief Guest at the final will be the MD of Walkers Tours, Vasantha Liyanananda.
