Four cornered battle for top honours in SriLankan Golf Festival

Nimal Wettimuni and Priyantha Kumara with 70 Total nett points and Mithum Perera (son of Nandasena Perera) and German Klaus Stein with 47 total gross points each are in the lead in the men's Sri Lankan Golf Festival organised by Victoria Golf Club and title sponsors being SriLankan Airlines which was worked off for third successive day at Victoria Golf Course at Digana yesterday. Leading the race for ladies was Suwen Selvaratnam with a total nett points of 76 and total gross points of 60 followed by Indira Tibblin with 73 nett points. Yvonne Abayaratne too is in the reckoning with 53 gross total points.

Two hundred twenty five golfers from several countries took part in this competition which will be continued for the fourth day today at 7 a.m. A further 100 competitors are expected to tee off this morning. There were as many as 80 foreigners and 40 locals. To add colour to the festive occasion was 33 ladies who participated. Heather Rithchie was outstanding on the first day collecting 40 nett points.

The race for the longest drive is led by David Smith followed closely by Ian Leader.

Jacque Dias with a swipe covering a distance of over 150 yards is leading the contest for the longest drive for ladies followed by Dhinuka Boraless, Indira Tibblin and Sripalee Ameratunga. The competition for juniors is led by Mithum Perera with 66 total nett points and 47 gross points.

But the above rankings could change with more games being played today.

The other who fared well in the Total nett points were Bo Lindberg (65), Mithum Perera (66), Mohan Ratnayake (65), John Reavy (64), Michael Richardson (64), Klaus Stein (64), Tony Witham (64), Primal Wijenayake (69), Romesh Abhyaratne (68), Cpat. Navin Silva (66) and Rohan de Silva (64), General S. V. Jayakoddy (63), L. Jayasuriya (64) and Sunil Jayakoddy (63).

Ladies total nett points is headed by Suwen Selvaratnam (76) followed by Yvonne Abhyaratne (72), Sally Collins (70), Dhinuka Boralessa (69), Jackie Dias (64), Roshini Sangani (64), Indira Tibblin (73). The distribution of awards is scheduled to take place later in the evening, at the Victoria Gulf Club premises.
