Tendulkar's 31st 'ton' keeps Indian hopes alive CALCUTTA, India, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Sachin Tendulkar struck his 31st Test century in majestic style on Saturday to give India a fighting chance of surviving in the third and final test against West Indies. The 29-year-old, playing his 103rd Test, is now just three centuries behind the world record held by Sunil Gavaskar. Tendulkar, who had failed to pass 50 in the series prior to Saturday's knock, came into form with an unbeaten 114 that took India to 195 for four at close of the fourth day's play. The home side had been reduced to 87 for four mainly due to an fiery opening spell by fast bowler Mervyn Dillon but Tendulkar and Vangipurappu Laxman, who was 30 not out, came together for a 108-run unbroken sixth wicket stand. West Indies, who took a 139-run first innings lead courtesy of 140 by Shivnarine Chanderpaul and 104 for his maiden Test century by Marlon Samuels, still have the upper hand. But India, now 56 runs ahead, are in with a good chance to draw the Test and a slim chance of forcing a win as the wicket is expected to heavily favour their spinners on the final day. |
