Merc. Hockey 'Sevens' : Elated skipper showers praise on coach by Pelham Juriansz Manjula Gunawardene, skipper of the successful Commercial Bank team that represented the Bank at the recently concluded Mercantile Hockey Association (MHA)'s "sevens" was elated at his team's performance at the 26th MHA "sevens". Having two National players in himself and Pradeep Heenkenda they had to outwit the more fancied Hatton National Bank 'A' and having drawn the earlier round game they were stretched to the limit to pull off a last minute win. He attributes the recent success of the team , which has won four of the last six "sevens" Tournaments, to the efforts of their dynamic coach Rohan Dissanayake. It is coach Dissanayake who has transformed the team and turned them into a bunch of winners instead of just being second best. Five of the Commercial Bank players have represented the Mercantile team in the Senior Nationals and have thus performed well. In the league Tournaments however their Arch banking rivals, Hatton National Bank have outclassed them ending up as runners up except in 1998 when they won the title. Commercial Bank has a successful team in the 'A' division only in Hockey and does not concentrate much on other sports like cricket in which the other Banks, especially HNB have been successful. Deshan Seneviratne, the Guest of Honour at the Finals paid tribute to the Mercantile Hockey Association (MHA) and its President Dennis de Rosayro considering the fact that he has served the organisation for 25 unbroken years and on a lighter note added. "It must be some sort of a record and as such he should be in the Guinness Book of Records." |
