Deaf student Saumya Maduwanthi wins sprint double by Leslie Fernando 18 year-old Saumya Maduwanthi a deaf 'A' level student attached to Kirillawela MV, Gampaha District achieved a fine 'double' winning the 100 metres dash and the 200 metres at the 3rd annual Sunshine Games held at the CMC Sports Complex at Reid Avenue yesterday. The events were held in athletics for one leg below knee amputees, with one or both arms missing or impaired, totally visually impaired, partially visually impaired, for hearing and or speech impaired, for children with special educational needs and for children with moderate mobility needs. Saumya in the athletic events for hearing and or speech impaired first won the 100 metres dash clocking 14.3 secs and then went on to complete a 'double' winning the 200 metres 28.3 secs. Saumaya has been participating in several district and zonal meets and has won several trophies for the school. Saumya also participated in the Al-Island Schools Athletic Championship and the National School Games. She studies and train in sports activities as other normal students of the Kirillawela MV. The Sunshine Games were organised by the Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan and sponsored by Citi Bank and Columbia Sportswear Company. The first, second and third place winners will be selected to participate at the School Disabled Games to be held in Hong-Kong. |
