Awards for HRM professionals The overall award at the first National HRM Awards ceremony held last week was bagged by Commercial Bank while SriLankan Airlines and Sri Lanka Telecom won the first and second runner-up positions respectively. The event was organised by the Association of HR Professionals, Institute of Personnel Management and the Post Graduate Institute of Management (PIM). "Well-developed people are the key to developed economies. Therefore, please re-visit your role as human resource managers and, CEOs, pease do not treat your Human Resource Managers (HRM) as maintenance people as they are the key to the success of your organisation," said Dr T.V. Rao, the well-known Indian academic, psychologist and HR Development professional, who delivered the keynote address on the occasion. Dr Rao said that good companies with good practices have proved that CEOs can make the difference by focusing on culture, vision and people. Speaking of the future of HRMs, he said that they will be the CEOs of the future as they know the art of focusing on the culture, vision and people of an organisation. During the last decade, the world has seen a revolution in technology with the customer as the focus. Therefore, HRM is critical to any organisation. Dr Rao said that honouring indigenous HR practices will lay the foundation for development of the field. Therefore, the awards ceremony is being held at an opportune time, he said. Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya, the chief guest on the occasion, said the Government is seriously looking at Human Resources, which was not the case in the past. "In this context, honouring HR professionals is most welcome and long overdue," he said. HR is the greatest asset a nation has and rich countries including the Asian giants have created wealth through HR. The Minister said that though we have the highest literacy rate, our people are not skilled, which results in low productivity. During the last few years, our country has experienced a decline in the level of discipline. He urged HRMs to inculcate a sense of belonging in the employment field and cited the example of Japan. Guest of honour, Minister of Labour and Employment Mahinda Samarasinghe said 'Jobsnet', the program to assist people find employment will get off the ground in January 2003. He also outlined the Government initiatives to develop HR in the country. Minister of Mass Communication Imtiyaz Bakeer Markar, who was also a guest of honour, said that HR Management plays a critical role in all spheres be it political, economic or social, but HRM practice is very low in the public sector. "Therefore, it is necessary to get the public sector involved in these aspects for the future well-being of the country," he said. The panel of judges were Director PIM Professor Gunapala Nanayakkara, Professor David Evans of PIM and Lasantha Rodrigo, HRM Consultant.
