Eleven killed as bus plunges into river in India SHIMLA, India, Nov 23 (AFP) - Eleven people were killed and 23 injured when a bus plunged into a gorge in the Himalayan tribal district of Kinnaur in northern India, police said Saturday. Around 40 people were on board the private bus when the accident took place Friday at Kinnaur, some 250 km (164 miles) from Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh state. The accident is the fourth in recent weeks in which drivers have lost control and their vehicles and plunged into the Sutlej river gorge, police said. People in the state have begun to doubt whether the drivers are skilled enough to take on the precarious legendary Hindustan Tibet Road. People often die as sudden landslides wipe out stretches of the road. A minor driving error could result in certain death, as vehicles go hurtling into the yawning gorge and are swallowed by the raging river. |
