Snow, fog cause delays at north Chinese airports An airport in northern China was closed by heavy snow while another saw significant delays because of dense fog, state media said Saturday. Taoxian International Airport near Shenyang in the northeast was reopened Saturday, more than 20 hours after heavy snowfall forced its closure, Xinhua news agency said. The snow, predicted by local weather forecasters to continue into the afternoon, had caused nearly 60 flights to be called off, affecting more than 6,000 passengers, the agency reported. Meanwhile, three days of dense fog have disrupted normal flights at Xianyang Airport near the northwestern city of Xian. Flights are permitted to take off and land only at midday when visibility exceeds 500 meters (1,670 feet), Xinhua quoted airport authorities as saying. Weather forecasters offered no immediate relief, saying the heavy fog was likely to last for about another week, Xinhua reported. |
