SLRC profits grow by 15% by Deepal Warnakulasuriya The Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) has recorded a profit growth of 15 per cent this year over last year. It has recorded a revenue of Rs 848.2 million compared to Rs 596.3 million in 2001. SLRC Chairman Prof. Dhammika Ganganath Dissanayake said that they have also increased air time sales. In 2001, the SLRC earned only Rs. 459.2 million by selling the air time; this year earnings have increased to Rs. 712.5 million. He said the Corporation still leads the television media, recording the highest viewership as well as the largest coverage in the country. Dissanayake pledged that by next year, he will be speaking not of millions, but of billions. The SLRC had also increased its total revenue by 55.2 per cent this year while it was only 3.3 per cent last year. He pointed out that revenue percentage was -0.3 and -7.1 in 1998 and 2000, which resulted in SLRC experiencing heavy losses in those years. He added that it was the first time a government institute, which experienced losses for four consecutive years, had transformed itself into a profitable institution within an year. The Chairman said that they had to face many problems when they took over the Corporation; the Treasury had rejected them grants. "However, the new management signed an agreement with the Treasury, promising to earn an income of over Rs. 650 million within the year. We were capable of reaching our target easily," he said. He added that they did not change the SLRC structure or its staff. "But we developed our human resources for a productive and profitable service. The Government aims to make the SLRC a self-depending institute and we are ready for it," Dissanayake said. |
