Ordering a meal

Business Styleby J.A.A.S. Ranasinghe

* Customarily, guests will be given a menu card no sooner they sit for dinner. If there are women in the group, they should be given the first preference in the selection of menus. If your partner is unaware about the meals to be ordered, you may come to her rescue by ordering dishes that you are conversant with. If you do not have a clear idea, you are free to discuss with the waiter before ordering.

* When dining in a Western restaurant, the appetizer and main course are ordered together.

Even in the selection of an appetizer, prior consent of the women is a courtesy. Customarily, desert is self served, ordered when everyone has finished the main serving.

While European women prefer alcohol such as wines and liqueurs, women from the Eastern region generally ask for orange, lime juice, ginger beer or beverages like Coca-Cola and Sprite. If no one in your group orders appetizer, it is better for you to skip it too.

* This reminder is for prospective candidates who have been asked to partake in a lunch or dinner as part of the selection process. Always avoid ordering expensive dishes. This does not mean that you should choose the cheapest menu. It is better to stay within the mid price range. Your expenditure habits will also be screened at this stage by the prospective employer.

* If eating in a Chinese restaurant, it is more advisable to let your host decide on the menu, unless you are aware of a special dish for which the restaurant is of fame.
