Internet Service Provider expands by ANTON NONIS Lanka Global Online (LGO), an Internet Service Provider in Colombo, has expanded its services to the North and the hill country. The extension of services, according to LGO's Managing Director, Rohan Karunaratne, had been possible due to advances the company had made in the field of electronic technology. LGO will use its own earth station which is linked to the Internet backbone in the USA via satellite. This has been done by connecting the Internet backbone system with the frame relay network and asymmetric satellite connection of subscribers. Kandy and Jaffna will be the initial beneficiaries of this facility which will later be spread to other areas in the North and hill country. It will assist subscribers to obtain digital subscriber lines and dial-up connections at high-speed Internet connectivity. The Digital Subscriber Line technology can bring high-band width information to homes and small businesses over ordinary copper telephone lines. The process will benefit all corporate customers in the hill country, hotels, educational institutions and State departments. Subscribers can also host their own mail servers, websites or on-line shopping malls. The company has planned live video streaming of popular local television channels which would enable a person to watch TV on the Internet, according to Karunaratne. The UNESCO-funded Kotmale radio station has already been provided with Internet services. LGO has also planned to connect, via high speed cable, to the United Kingdom. |
