Advanced diploma course for CIMA students

by Jayampathy Jayasinghe

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) has introduced a new certificate and an advanced diploma course for students reading for the CIMA qualification while progressing through various levels of the CIMA course.

CIMA Chief Executive Officer Charles Tilley told a recent news conference in Colombo that the institute has introduced three separately identifiable qualifications. He was accompanied by CIMA's Director International Development Kathy Grimshaw.

Under the new syllabus, students who have successfully completed the foundation level examination will be awarded the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting while those who have passed the intermediate level examination will be awarded the CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting.

Tilley said that corporate governance is important to manage a business as investors always look for a good return on their investment. CIMA qualifications focus on good corporate governance and strategic management on finance and CIMA professionals are competent in these areas. "The world is moving very fast and projects are becoming increasingly important," he said.

Asked whether he was satisfied with the CIMA pass rates in Sri Lanka, Tilley said that CIMA always maintained a standard in its qualifications internationally. It is important that this standard is not lowered. "We are here to remind Sri Lankan employers and others worldwide that the CIMA qualification meets the specific requirements of finance."

CIMA Sri Lanka President Sudarshan Senaratne said that CIMA always strives to meet current and future business needs and create employment opportunities for CIMA students and members. He said that CIMA is planning to issue certificates to those who have passed these examinations in September 2002.

Tilley joined the institute in June 2001, having previously been the Chairman of the Wealth Management Division of Merchant Bank Granville Baird. As the CEO of CIMA, he leads the senior management team and works closely with the institute's honourary officers.
