Barefoot Toy Fair:

An explosion of colours

If you have interactive fun-oriented kids, give them a rousing X'mas thrill by taking them to this year's colour explosion of the Barefoot Toy Fair at the Barefoot Gallery, Colombo 3, You will know why when the year's range of toys come centre stage, oozing an energetic, youthfully appealing designer chic.

They are not only cute and fluffy stuffed animals sitting on a shelf, but also cleverly designed, sturdy toys that are great to play with, or interesting conversation pieces to have scattered decoratively around your house.

Little green lizards skitter across hectic lemon yellow grass. Frogs scattered in judiciously discreet corners wink at you like little bright jewels. A band of sarcastic-mouthed camels march across a psychedelic desert sunset. Pink elephants and orange cows leap vividly into focus, lavishly bedecked with trial bells and vain adornments.

The Exhibition kicks off today December 15, and goes on until January 12, 2003. One highlight is the sale of tribal animals, cheerful mouse families, elegant elephants and rainforest denizens all visually conceived by the Art Director Senaka de Silva. Senaka's collection of tribal animals is an Eastern and ethnic counterpoint to all the fluffy bears and bunnies which crowd store shelves at Christmas!

The look is all about individuality, with the critters all oozing personality from every cotton pore, be it the gleamingly green-eyed elephants or the solemn faced mountain goats, or even the madly grinning cows.

Preethi Hapuwatte, joins the exhibition with tropical fish, butterfly play cushions, a lively range of beady-eyed farmyard birds, other wildlife and notably merry-looking frilly lizards and frog. The fabric backdrops come from the Barefoot Curtaining and Furnishing range designed by Barbara Sansoni, Marie Gnanaraj and Nelun Harasgama.

The exhibition is a labour of love, the Barefoot fervently adds, under the encouragement and expert advice of Barbara. - (J.L.)
