Cuddly toys 'n' colourful creations

by LAKMAL WELABADA

She gets up at 4 o'clock in the morning and goes to bed late at night. Ramani Wasantha Amarasooriya never allows one minute to pass by without making the maximum use of it.

A busy housewife, she not only looks after her children and handles the mundane household chores without a daily help, but also supports her husband with his furniture business and finds time to devote to patchwork needle art, which needs a lot of patience.

Excelling in the latter, she won the second place in the All Island Patchwork Competition and Exhibition held this year.

Essentially a self taught crafts person, Ramani sharpened her skills under Daisy Vittachi, a well-known personality in the needlecraft field in Sri Lanka.

Ramani was also placed second in the Small Items Category at the 'Share the Joy' needlecraft competition and exhibition in 2001.

"I value my time a lot. Even after I drop my daughter at her classes, I prefer to engage myself in some kind of hand sewing in the car, so that I don't waste even those few minutes," says Ramani, with a great degree of pride.

To Ramani needlework is relaxing and gives a lot of peace of mind. "It is almost like a form of meditation," she says.

Among her creations are soft toys, cushion covers, bed coverlets, wardrobes, bathroom slippers, bags, floor rugs, table clothes and mats done in beautiful eye catching designs. Also standing out are cuddly soft bunnies, doggies and puppies, teddies and baby monkeys.

Ramani conducts needlecraft classes, and says she gets a lot of satisfaction teaching underprivileged students free of charge.

"I believe money is not everything in life," says the innovative artiste who cherishes the twin desires of holding a solo exhibition in needlecraft and sharing her knowledge with the destitute and the underprivileged children and others to develop their talents and help them eke out an existence.
