Remarkable service by Govt by Deepal Warnakulasuriya "Within a period of one year since the UNF Government came to power, it has rendered remarkable service to the country with priority for peace. A year ago, a better tomorrow was unforeseen, but the situation has now changed. Peace was the main issue what the people wanted at the general election and, we have now almost fulfilled that pledge," said the United National Party Secretary-General Senarath Kapukotuwa, commenting on the completion of its first year in office. Mr. Kapukotuwa said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was adamant on achieving a permanent solution to the ethnic crisis in the North and East and the government had spared no pains to restore peace with the LTTE, facilitated by the Norwegian Government. He said that the government initiated the 100-day programme with the aim of creating an efficient service and a better tomorrow for all citizens. He said that the government had planned several development projects with the objective of mainly solving the unemployment problem in the year 2003. He said that the proposed 'youth camps' would offer youth ample employment opportunities besides assisting to develop the economy of the country. "By the end of the second year of the UNF regime there would be lasting peace and a revival of economy in the country," Mr. Kapukotuwa added. Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksha said that he was satisfied with the ongoing peace process, but at the same time, the government should reveal their future plans based on the process with the LTTE. He expressed certain doubts, the way the peace process was handled. Despite peace being its key weapon, the government should look into hardships experienced by the people, the increasing cost of living and growing inflation," he added. |
