'EPDP will not run away from Jaffna'

The Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) General Secretary and Jaffna District parliamentarian Douglas Devananda told the 'Sunday Observer' that his party would remain in the Jaffna peninsula and continue its political activities despite the recent agitations against it in the North.

Devananda was commenting on the agitations opposite his party offices throughout Jaffna which led to police firing in certain areas.

According to Devananda, his party entered the political mainstream a decade ago and they had handed over the weapons which they had for their own security following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government and the LTTE last February.

"The current agitation against our party was well planned to undermine our political activities. We have pointed out this to the Prime Minister, Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, foreign embassies and other political parties," Devananda said.

He said: "We are not against the peace process, but we want a constructive political solution to the ethnic crisis. We are also eagerly observing the developments on the current peace initiative. But our opponents are trying to create a sinister campaign against us to sabotage our political activities.

The EPDP has two parliamentarians from the Jaffna district and several of its members are represented in the local bodies in the North and the East. We have been functioning in the North and East for more than ten years. Therefore we will not simply run away from our political activities," he said.

Meanwhile, the protest campaign against the EPDP in Jaffna was discussed in detail at the sub-committee level talks between the Government and the LTTE in Muhamalai in the North yesterday.
