Sri Lanka to participate in 16 sports at SAF Games by LESLIE FERNANDO Sri Lanka will participate in 16 disciplines athletics, tennis, hockey, wrestling, soccer, table tennis, volleyball, squash, taekwondo, kabaddi, swimming, boxing, rifle shooting, badminton, weight lifting and karate at the 9th South Asian Federation Games (SAF Games) to be held from March 26 to April 6 in Islamabad, Pakistan in 2003. According to a senior officer of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the controlling bodies should adhere to the instructions with regard to the selections and the date to commence SAF Games residential coaching camps. Accordingly, the dates given by the Ministry are December 8 - tennis, December 9 - hockey, December 12 - wrestling, December 9 - athletics, December 20 - table tennis, December 18 - soccer, December 25 - taekwondo, January 1 - volleyball and Squash, January 6- Kabaddi, Karate, weightlifting, January 25 - swimming, January 10 - boxing, January 15 - badminton and rifle shooting. The Sports Ministry will grant financial assistance to all those selected for the residential coaching camps commencing on the above dates. The residential coaching camps to be set up will be supervised by a special committee appointed by the Sports Ministry. The officials will visit these training camps to get first hand information on the training programs and submit reports to the Sports Ministry. Furthermore the Sports Ministry will also appoint a special medical unit and a committee to look into the players' fitness and other medical aspects of the selected. The Sports Ministry feels that no one should be selected to participate at the SAF Games if that person is not fit. |
