Amila Withanaarachchi eyes trip to Australia to improve cricketing ability

19-year-old J. Amila Withanaarachchi, the Observer-Bata Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Outstation 2002 was instrumental for Bandaranayake College, Gampaha's fine showing in the 2002 school cricket season.

He scored over 650 runs, including eight half centuries and claimed 32 wickets. Amila captained the college cricket team this year.

During last season, he scored over 575 runs including a century and 4 half centuries. This promising allrounder captured 23 wickets too, bowling leg-spinners.

Last year Amila was awarded 'colours' for being Best Batsman in under-17 group. In 2000, he was the captain of the College under-17 cricket team. In 1998, he was the captain of the under-15 team.

He has performed creditably ever since he started playing for the under-13 team as a leg spinner in 1996.

Lanky Amila bats competently at number 3. He has a fine temperament and has the ability to play well within his limits. He is a fine leg-spinner and his ability to maintain a fine line length has been a trump card.

He is coached by Kanishka Amarasinghe.

Amila is presently studying at the British Council and also continues to play cricket. His aim is to go over to Australia for advanced training and also to play league cricket to gain more experience.
