UB40 Concert : A dazzling show

The skies were overcast and the winds were chilly and unfriendly, but the enthusiasm of the many fans waiting patiently to dance and enjoy the reggae beat of their idol UB 40 was on a never-before-seen high.

They cam in droves, the young and hip, the old, families with picnic baskets to the Premadasa Stadium on that memorable day of the Peace Concert to be a part of all the experience - the event a milestone in our musical history. Even the long walk to the stadium didn't flag down their spirits.

UB 40 was a once-in-a lifetime opportunity and the threat of rain was no damages to the reggae fans.

A loud roar of happiness and clapping greeted UB 40 no sooner the stage was darkened - the signal that UB 40 was ready to go. With professional timing the strong brass section blew in the opening chords to the simultaneous burst of dazzling laser lights and from then on UB 40's special brand of rugae floated out across the stadium, reached out to the fans in the stands and pavilion compelling them to dance, sway, sing, clap, smile and be a part of the Peace Concert which Ali Campbell said was better than tighting. Unfortunately the stage was so-o-o far away from the audience that Campbell kept re-iterating 'Can you hear me'? in between songs!

Ali Campbell was in excellent form singing msot of the songs and with the fabulous wind section - three saves and a trumpet - together with the strong musicianship from the others, UB 40's one and a half hours of almost twenty reggae hits was sheer delight. The audience kept screaming out their requests. Was he able to hear we wondered especially when Ali Campbell was positioned at the far end of the stadium!

Yet 'Kingston Town', 'Red Red Wine', Falling in Love', 'Cherry Oh Baby', sent the fans berserk with happiness and the encore was a bonanza to the fans who were wanting to stay longer. It was close upon midnight and the massive reggae audience reluctantly trooped out, taking home with them memories of a musical Peace Concert that will never be forgotten in the years to come.
