Sri Lankan cricketers play for Hope project Clifford Landers reporting from Australia Over 8,000 Sri Lankan spectators are expected to throng the R.M Hooper Oval, Hastings in Melbourne here today (Sunday) to show their support, lift and help boost the morale of our Sri Lankan cricketers when they take on a Victorian Country XI in a Project Hope charity cricket match. Although the Lankan supporters here are disappointed with the performance of our previous four matches, they strongly believe that our cricketers need a physiological boost in every department and Melbourne is the only state in Australia with its large Lankan contingent able to pump them up. While the Victoria Country XI consists of unknown but prominent district and country players, it is hoped that the Lankan team could get as much out of this game and especially avoid been defeated which would bring a fitting end towards event which is expected to be held before a carnival atmosphere. Many individuals and institutions have contributed to this event, which is being held to raise funds for the Hope cancer hospital, Maharagama. The concept of this event was mooted by Eddie Gray, Nigel de Kretser and David Cruze while the working party involved are Dr. Quintus de Zylva (Australian representative for BCCSL), Roshan Mahanama (Vice-Chairman HOPE Project and Vice-President SL Cricketers Association), Ian Crawford (Prahran CC), Bill Foley (Victorian Country Cricket League), Norm Reeves, Sharon Conolly and Steve Brown (Ferntree Gully CA), Wayne Ross (Mornington Peninsula CA), Fury Dipitro (Yarra Valley (CA), Keith Thompson (VCCSL), Andrewe Larrat (Victorian CA) and Malik Zayeer (Representative of HOPE Cancer Hospital in Australia) and Alston Koch (Media Consutant), Serendib News, the only Sri Lankan community newspaper in Australia through Virosh and Geethika Perera, Knox Tavern and Aldo Kerner (Kandy Spices) have also contributed towards this worthy project. |
