Dining in style Business Style by J.A.A.S.Ranasinghe

* When consuming a Western-styled soup, you may use the round metal spoon, scooping away from yourself. This is to ensure that soup does not accidentally fall on your body. When the level of the soup sees its bottom, you may slightly tilt the bowl away from your body. In case of a Japanese or Chinese soup, a ceramic spoon is used. You can scoop either way, but many Chinese people scoop towards themselves.

* In both cases, fill about two-thirds of the spoon and sip, avoiding slurping from both sides of the spoon. Do not open your mouth until the soup spoon reaches your mouth. Similarly, do not insert the whole spoon into your mouth. When you finish, place the spoon on the plate (on which the soup bowl sits). The most common mistake is the soup spoon being placed in the bowl instead of the plate.

* One should never take a bite from the bread roll or slice it in a sandwich style. Table manners suggest that you should break it into bite-sized pieces. Do not take in more than one piece into your mouth at a time. The golden rule is that others should not see what is being chewed or taken inside your mouth. Another important rule is that one should avoid any kind of noise emanating from your mouth while eating or drinking.

* The bread and butter plate is placed on your left hand side.

* Place a slide of butter or a spoonful of jam on your bread plate and spread from your portion. This will help avoid someone else's portion of butter or jam.

* When you want to break the bread roll, break it in the presence of others. Never take the bread roll on to your lap or break it under the table.

* When flying, your lunch or dinner will consist of items such as bread, butter, jam and the main dishes. In such a situation, it is advisable to take bread roll with butter before shifting to the main menu.
