Dharshan John : Building upon dreams
Name : Dharshan John
Education John was born to a family of four children. His father was an accountant in the Government service while his mother was a teacher. Educated at Wesley College, Colombo, he had a liking for engineering-related work from his young days . "I received training in electrical engineering which helped me to sharpen my skills." Career John worked for a construction company for five years before deciding to go on his own. "I started taking contracts to build houses in 1985 though I established the company in 1987." Company "The objective of my company is to provide guidance and support to today's busy professionals to build their homes. With the opening up of the economy in the late 70s, people have got more and more busy and do not have the time to build their own homes. To cater to this segment of people, we offer a design and build package where everything from planning to building and interior decoration is well cared for by professionals in their respective fields." Quality "I am very particular about the quality of the homes we build. Therefore, we maintain high standards and have been able to reap the dividends in the form of a good client base. Our promise is quality and we honour this promise even if it is at a loss to us." All homes built by the company are supervised by a site engineer and a project coordinator in addition to being personally monitored by John himself. "I have trained my engineers to meticulously attend to every little detail in the homes as well as to handle clients," said John. Anyone who needs to build a home will find a solution at Dwellco as it is prepared to build homes according to the customer's needs and budget. "Once we give the estimates, we do not increase even a cent as this leads to loss of credibility. All specifications are spelt out clearly and agreed upon prior to finalisation of the contract. This method has avoided any ambiguities arising with client expectations. Relationship He said the relationship between the contractor and house owner normally ends once construction is completed, but "with us it is different, and at most times, clients have become my good friends". Potential "Unlike in the past, the present generation does not like to live in rented houses. Instead, they want to build their own homes. Therefore, there is a big potential for construction of homes. Also 'basses' playing out the owners has led to people seeking professional advice. Earlier people thought that working with basses was cheaper. This idea has changed now and with peace in the air, the sky is the limit for professional home builders," John said. He said that some of the advantages of going to a contractor are competitive prices and quality materials and fittings. He said: "Clients cannot purchase building materials at a lower price than us because we get discounts when purchasing in bulk. The selection of materials should also be done carefully as the market is flooded with fakes. "We limit the number of houses we build at any given time because we want to give quality homes to all our customers with a personalised service." Pillars of success Hard work, sincerity, dedication, commitment and staying focused on quality are the pillars of success for John who considers his staff as his strength. Future plans "My ambition is to be a leader in personalised home building and working hard to improve and effect new techniques as building homes is a life long investment. We are also planning to provide housing solutions to the lower middle income group as well." |
